Requirements of Becoming an EMT
Before you begin an EMT career (or training for one), there are some specific requirements that need to be fulfilled. Here are the requirements you need to possess when you sign up for your basic EMT training course (always check to see if your state has additional requirements to fulfill).
- Age – The minimum age to be an EMT is 18
- A high school diploma or the equivalent is required
- Good physical stamina is required
- Good listening, problem-solving, and communication skills are imperative
- A valid driver’s license
- No criminal background
Become CPR and First Aid Certified
Every state will require a CPR certification to work in emergency medical services. Many CPR schools now offer in-person, as well as online courses. CPR is necessary for EMT’s and paramedics working in the field when a person is not responding or not breathing.
Complete EMT Basic Training
Now that you have your CPR certification, it is time to find the right EMT-Basic certification. This training typically takes between 120 and 150 hours, and are offered at various community colleges, technical institutes, or an EMS academy.
Pass the State or National Exam
After your training and a background check is complete, it is time to pass your state or national exam. The exam is administered through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Candidates have three opportunities, with a 15-day waiting period in between each test.
Renew Your EMT Certificate
It is important to keep up with continuing education and renewing your EMT certificate if you plan to have a career as an EMT. Your license usually needs to be renewed every two years. Make sure to check licensing requirements in your state and the national level, as well.
Advance Your Career
There are many ways to advance your career when working as an EMT. There is an advanced certificate that typically requires an additional 300 hours of coursework, or you can complete a two-year degree where you learn more pertinent information, such as anatomy and physiology, advanced life support, or clinical training in hospitals.
