Layperson CPR Training FAQs

Why learn CPR?

Approximately 400,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest each year in the US. About 80% of cardiac arrests happen at home. Performing early CPR increases the victim’s chance of survival by 40%. Every minute that goes by without chest compressions the chance of survival goes down by 20%.

What is CPR training, and why is it important?

CPR training stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which is a life-saving technique used in emergency situations when someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. It involves chest compressions and rescue breaths to help restore oxygen to the body and brain. CPR training is essential because it equips individuals with the knowledge and skills to act quickly and confidently in emergency situations, potentially saving someone’s life.

How often should CPR training be renewed or refreshed?

It is recommended that CPR training be renewed or refreshed every 2 years, as skills can become rusty over time. Additionally, new research and updates to CPR guidelines may require individuals to update their training.

Who can attend the Family and Friends CPR course?

Family and friends CPR classes are open to anyone who wants to learn basic life support techniques, including parents, grandparents, caregivers, babysitters, and other non-medical professionals. These classes are designed for laypersons and do not require any prior medical knowledge or experience.

What will I learn in a family and friends CPR class?

In a family and friends CPR class, you will learn how to recognize and respond to life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest, choking, and breathing problems. You will learn basic life support techniques, including CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). We make sure you have hands-on CPR practice time with our mannequin to ensure you can gain the skills needed. The class will also cover important safety considerations, such as how to protect yourself and the victim from harm during an emergency.

How long does a family and friends CPR class take?

The length of a family and friends CPR class can vary depending on the specific course and the instructor. Generally, these classes take anywhere from 2-4 hours to complete. Some classes may include additional topics, such as first aid or bloodborne pathogens, which can extend the length of the class.
