TL;DR: Join us for our next class on May 26th. Most Houston hospitals still verify on the NRP 8th Edition, but the 9th Edition is rolling out next. The core algorithm, the Golden Minute, and effective ventilation as the priority all stay. What’s getting refreshed: instructor flow, team communication emphasis, equipment prep, and updated case-based learning. If your card is current, you’re good until renewal — but your *next* recert will look a little different.
Why this matters for L&D and NICU staff in Houston
If you work in labor and delivery, NICU, or special care nursery in Harris County, your hospital almost certainly requires NRP verification. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is co-developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association and is the standard of care for newborn resuscitation in U.S. delivery rooms.
Right now, NRP classes near Houston verify on the NRP 8th Edition. The 9th Edition update is the first major refresh since 2021, and Houston hospital educators have started preparing teams for the transition.
What stayed the same in the 9th Edition
The fundamentals don’t change. If you certified on the 8th Edition, you already know:
– The Golden Minute — effective ventilation should be established within the first 60 seconds of life when needed
– Ventilation is priority 1 — most newborns who need help just need help breathing
– Compression-to-ventilation ratio — 3:1 for newborns when chest compressions are indicated
– Epinephrine dosing — IV/IO 0.02 mg/kg (range 0.01–0.03 mg/kg) remains standard
– Pulse oximetry on the right hand/wrist — preductal SpO₂ targets unchanged
What’s being refreshed in the 9th Edition
The update is less about overhauling the algorithm and more about how the program is *taught and practiced*:
- Streamlined decision points in the ventilation branch — clearer flow when initial ventilation is not effective
- Stronger team and communication emphasis — defined roles at the warmer, closed-loop communication, briefing/debriefing
- Equipment and thermal management — updated guidance on preheating, plastic wrap for preterm infants, and SpO₂ sensor placement
- Updated case-based learning — new scenarios reflecting current evidence on cord management and post-resuscitation care
Do I need to retake NRP if I’m certified on the 8th Edition?
No. Your current 8th Edition card is valid for the full 2-year cycle. When you renew, your next class — and your next provider card — will be on the 9th Edition materials.
For most Houston nurses, that means:
– If you certified in 2024, you’ll likely renew on the 9th Edition in 2026
– If you certified in 2025, you’ll renew on the 9th Edition in 2027
– If you’re brand new to NRP, your hospital will tell you which edition the upcoming class uses
How to prepare for your next NRP class
- Confirm the edition with your training provider before you register
- Complete the online modules through the NRP Learning Platform before your in-person skills session
- Review the algorithm — even if it feels familiar, the flow refresh is worth a second look
- Practice team communication — the 9th Edition leans into closed-loop communication and defined roles
