TL;DR:
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable device used to restart the heart during sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). To use it: turn it on, apply the pads (following the pictures), wait for it to analyze, and press the red flashing button if it advises a shock. You’ll find AEDs in airports, malls, gyms, and schools. Want hands-on training? Health Street Houston offers in-person CPR AED online course and American Heart Association BLS CPR and AED certification.

What Is an AED?
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a life-saving device designed to treat someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). It delivers an electric shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. AEDs are designed for everyday people — no medical background needed — and they give step-by-step audio instructions once turned on. Many students also learn using AED trainer units and AED trainer pads to practice safely.
How to Use an AED (in Under 60 Seconds)
At Health Street, we break it down into a few simple steps:
- Turn on the AED – Most models have a green ON button.
- Apply the pads – Follow the pictures on the pads. One goes on the upper right chest, the other on the lower left side.
- Let the AED analyze – It will check the person’s heart rhythm.
- Stand clear and shock if advised – If prompted, press the flashing red button.
- Resume CPR immediately after the shock is delivered.
This process is taught in our AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED classes, available both in-person and as a Heartsaver CPR AED online hybrid option. All students receive a Heartsaver CPR card valid for 2 years.
AED Location Secrets: Where to Find One Fast
The Obvious (But Often Missed) AED Spots:
- Airports, train stations, and bus terminals
- Shopping malls, supermarkets, and retail giants
- Gyms, community centers, and stadiums
The Hidden AED Havens:
- Schools and universities – usually near the admin office or nurse’s station
- Places of worship and community centers – often at the main entrance or kitchen
- Large offices and industrial sites – typically in break rooms or near security desks
Use Technology to Your Advantage:
- Apps like PulsePoint Respond and AED Map show nearby AEDs in real-time
- Google Search Tip: Try “AED near me” when on location
- Look for AED signage – usually bright red or green with a heart and lightning bolt symbol
- Use bilingual tools – Look for signage or resources for AED Spanish access when needed
Why AED Knowledge Makes You a Lifesaver
Sudden cardiac arrest doesn’t wait. The faster someone receives defibrillation, the higher their chance of survival.
That’s why simply knowing where AEDs are — and how to use one — makes you a vital part of the emergency response chain.
This is emphasized in programs like the Heartsaver CPR AED First Aid course and the CPR Basic Life Support course for clinical professionals.
